TeenPirate.com was created, in part, to help increase interest in historical fiction reading for teens and tweens. These types of books bridge the historical facts that kids routinely study in school with an exciting and engaging story line. These stories may help them retain more of those facts by giving them a greater understanding of the context of a time period. The use of actual people and events can also encourage an appreciation of history. Furthermore, the interesting characters and exciting plots set the stage for the enjoyment of reading all kinds of fiction.
Who is Hannah Pritchard?
The site is centered around the historical fictional character of Hannah Pritchard. She has lost her parents and brother when marauding soldiers kill them. Hannah soon finds herself dreaming of revenge upon the British for the murder of her family. She travels to Boston to find help from family, but soon finds out that she needs to fend for herself. After her first glimpse of the privateers in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, she wishes she could join one of their ships.
Although she sails on a ship and takes treasure from the enemy, she is not quite the pirate indicated in the masthead. Along with other patriots, she is actually a contracted privateer for the upstart United States government during the Revolutionary War. She skirts danger around every turn, hoping and praying to avoid capture by the British or their Allies–who would label the crew as true pirates and ultimately punish her as being one.
Hannah’s daring adventures are chronicled in three titles written by acclaimed historical fiction author, Bonnie Pryor, and published by Enslow Publishers, Inc.

What is on this site?
You can read select chapters of Hannah's story right from her trilogy. Portions of her long-lost diary are being posted regularly to give readers more insight into Hannah's character. These diary entries are exclusive to Teenpirate.com and not available anywhere else.
There are a number of pirate-themed activities on this site to engage your children in the colonial setting of the story. The crafts can be made from basic art supplies that you probably already have on hand. And the recipes are fun family activities that will certainly give you a colonial taste like no other!
This site also profiles lots of books. Some relate to the historical period or conditions that Hannah is living through. Some feature the historical fiction adventures of other teenagers in different settings. Some may just be books about subjects that Hannah herself has expressed an interest in reading about. All titles feature links for where to purchase and may already be available at your local library or will be soon.
Lastly, there is a reviews section that lets you share your thoughts and feelings on the Hannah Pritchard books, this site, or historical fiction books in general.
